Gene Keys, Frequently Asked
The questions people ask before they run a reading, answered plainly.
Do I need my exact birth time for the Gene Keys?
Not for the free reading. Your Life's Work key comes from your birth date. For the full profile, your birth time and place let the Radiance and Purpose spheres be placed accurately. If your time is unknown, the profile still generates and marks which spheres are approximate.
Are the Gene Keys the same as Human Design?
They share a chart. Human Design uses the same 64 hexagram positions to describe how you make decisions and exchange energy: types, authorities, centres. The Gene Keys take the same positions and read them as a contemplative spectrum instead: Shadow, Gift, Siddhi. You can use both.
Is my Shadow a bad thing?
No. The Shadow is the same energy as the Gift, running under pressure. Nothing gets removed. The practice is to recognise the pattern often enough that it loosens its grip, at which point the Gift is simply what remains.
Who created the Gene Keys?
Richard Rudd, a British author, published the system in 2009 after working with the I Ching and Human Design. This is an independent reading tool built on the publicly documented structure. Gene Keys is a registered trademark of Gene Keys Publishing Ltd, used only to describe what the tool reads; this site is not affiliated with or endorsed by Richard Rudd or Gene Keys Publishing.
Is this related to Sabian Decoded?
Same builder, sibling project. Sabian Decoded works with the 360 images of the zodiac degrees; this tool works with the 64 archetypes of the I Ching, and Soul Contract Calculator is the third. Different systems, same care taken.
How should I use my Gene Keys reading?
Slowly. The system is built for contemplation rather than consultation. Hold one key in the background of your attention for weeks and watch where it shows up, rather than reading it once and filing it away. The reading is written to be returnable.
What is my Life's Work in the Gene Keys?
Your Life's Work is the Gene Key at the position of your Sun at birth. It describes how you are built to contribute and is the first of your four Prime Gifts. It needs only your birth date.
What are the four Prime Gifts?
They are the four keys your chart activates: Life's Work, Evolution, Radiance and Purpose. Together they form your Activation Sequence, the first pass through your profile.
What is the difference between a Gene Key and a gate?
They are the same 64 positions. Human Design calls them gates and reads their mechanics; the Gene Keys call them keys and read them as a Shadow, Gift and Siddhi spectrum. The numbers match.
Do the Gene Keys change over time?
The keys in your chart do not change; they are fixed by your birth data. What changes is you. The frequency you live a key at can move from Shadow toward Gift and Siddhi as you work with it.
Is the Gene Keys calculator free?
Yes. The free reading returns your Life's Work Gene Key from your birth date. A paid full reading covers all four Prime Gifts and an action plan.
What is a hologenetic profile?
It is the full map the Gene Keys draw from your birth data, placing one key in each sphere across the three sequences. This tool reads the Activation Sequence, your four Prime Gifts.
How accurate is this calculator?
It places your Life's Work from your Sun position, which is stable across the day, so your birth date is enough for that key. The full profile is sharpened by your birth time; without it, the tool marks which spheres are approximate.
